Mix-up at a checkpoint spoils Cervantes chances of a double E2 victory in Greece

by on 30/08/10 at 7:02 am

KTM Enduro E2 factory rider Ivan Cervantes, well at home on the hard and dry track at Serres in Greece started the weekend with Spanish flair when he topped the podium on Saturday but a mix up at a checkpoint on Sunday cost his a three minute penalty to put a damper on an otherwise good weekend.

Cervantes was a natural in the hot and dry conditions similar to his home country and he made no mistake about his intentions on Saturday. Fast and aggressive, he came in ahead of Mika Ahola by a narrow margin while KTM rider Pierre-Alexandre Renet was third, trailing the two front runners by about one minute. But when the odds were on another top result for Ivan on Sunday there was a misunderstanding about the time he was to go through the checkpoint. He rode in too early and as a result picked up a 3 minute penalty and had to be content on Day Two with eighth place. Renet was again third on Sunday to give KTM another podium.

Cervantes’ factory teammate Thomas Oldrati struggled to find his rhythm over the weekend and finished with an 8-14 result. Cervantes must now work hard to overcome the 30-point deficit between him and his nemesis Mika Ahola as riders go into the final four rounds of the season, two in Turkey and the final two in France.
